    Rosanne,

    Looking at Word tracker to find good key words, I key in (Wild Stallion), the voume is 5 and competition is 14.
    Now I key in, (Wild Stallions Fighting), and it has a volume of 2 and competition of 0. My question is, do I pick the key word with the lower competition and volume?

      John,

      First of all looking at the numbers in the results for “wild stallion” — those numbers are WAY low. I don’t think it’s helpful to target keywords or phrases that have very low numbers of searches. You need to expand what you are targeting and not get narrower–down to almost 0 results. There are people behind these keywords searching. We want to target these PEOPLE behind the searches and hopefully a good number of them (but not hundreds of thousands or millions of searches — that’s too broad a target).

      And then we want those keywords to also be relevant to our theme, genre or ebook in general. What is the title and genre of the book you want to target keywords for? If it’s specifically for “wild stallion(s)” you still need to expand…. what about wild horses or just horses? Or is it in the genre “western” then search for that.

    I found that just changing branded (search revealed about 20,000 hits) to brand had a large search increase to 75,000 hits.
    Also, I am finding one word searches are giving me more hits and two or three words.
    Roxanne, is there a target number in general we want to hit?
    Also, since I am writing fiction, are these hits just for people searching for a fiction book?

      Hi Kyle,

      I generally recommend shooting for a 2-word phrase, maybe a 3-word phrase (if it’s not too narrow like under 100-1000 for Google’s Keyword tool or under 10-50 for Wordtracker). One word phrases often are too broad and general to target successfully (lots of competition from other people because being #1 on those words means ALOT of eyeballs).

      I cannot state a target number because there are literally millions of potential phrases or keywords. However,I can make a judgement if I see the keywords targeted and the numbers that go with them. This is why I recommend going through a genre list for media because those keywords are “tried and true” with people looking for them, and also they tend to be 2-3 words long.

      The keyword tools I recommended are NOT for books or ebooks. They are actually keywords/results from the search engines of what people use to find a WEBSITE. However, these keywords and the results will help you target better between a “good keywords” and a dud with no traffic or people searching. We tend to use the same keywords for things we are interested in. Plus the search engines (and Amazon’s search box) make suggestions of keyword phrases, too. Pay attention to those suggestions, because they are based on past searches people did on Google or Amazon or Bing, etc.

      Please Note: Keyword research is useful as a guideline to targeting markets of eyeballs. DO NOT get caught up in exact numbers or exact results. The numbers and comparisons will make more sense as you continbue t do keyword research over time. Don’t target keywords with millions or hundreds of thousands of results in the Google keyword tool, and by the same token, don’t target keywords in Google that have only 100 results.

      Also, try to target different keyword phrase categories or genre. Don’t be repetitive like:

      Gluten free
      Gluten free diet
      Gluten free food list
      etc.
      etc.

      Try a relevant mix:
      Romantic comedy
      Contemporary romance novel
      cowboy western romance
      romantic stories
      alpha male

        PS. Kyle, Why are you searching brand/branded? That could mean a cow brand/branding an animal, a company brand and probably come other meanings not here. Single words are too broad… Also think Would you really search for a fiction story because it has brand/branded/branding in it? Think more about genre and categories of themes or stories that a reader WANTS to read.
